Pondering Community
Over the years "community" has been one of the foundational blocks of Faith COMMUNITY Bible Church. But trying to really figure out what that means can sometimes be harder than it sounds.
One year we had a thanksgiving celebration together. One activity was decorating a large banner with images and words about what we were thankful for. During the course of the day, various people, both kids and adults, proceeded to create this banner
Some people thought very concretely; a house, their family, their pets, etc.. Others made random celebrative marks. Some built their own pictures while others chose to embellish on what others began. Some established their identity clearly, writing their names in and around their pictures. Others remained anonymous. Little Anne was just learning to spell her name and she almost had it down, too: the letters were a little misformed, but we all knew it was our Anne anyway.
That's how it is for us as a body here. Like Anne, many of us are just learning how to spell the names God has given us and it's nice to know we are in a safe enough place to be known even when we don't form all the letters perfectly. Others try new things on for size, incorporating them into their own pictures while there are those who establish the basic picture and vision which others add to, helping us actually walk it out.
This banner is like our church. Everyone's identity is in it and yet none of us can claim it as our own exclusively. And what makes it work is when we take each other's hands and join the dance led by God who weaves us in and around ourselves. Only as we join with the Lord of the dance have we the courage and the humility to see each other through God's eyes.
